Route Type: Point to point.
This 50 km ultra marathon is a popular Comrades Marathon qualifier, which attracts a vast number of novice Comrades participants. An undulating and scenic run, with a variety of challenges combined with fun and camaraderie. Starting in Middelburg before the town really wakes up, the first few kilometres take you through the mist and onto the Loskop Road. Suddenly you find yourself in a different world, a distance from city life, in total contrast to the starting point.
The first 20 km are run through typical highveld country which is relatively flat. It can be fairly challenging as well, with a gradual yet rather challenging pull to the Post Office tower, at the 22 km mark. Then you are faced with a 7 km downhill to the 29 km mark. The first test and major uphill comes at the 30 km mark as you climb the back of Bugger's Hill. It is here that the special appeal of this magnificent race can be appreciated.
The mountain pass is simply breathtaking and is sure to impress even the most widely travelled runner with its sheer splendour. But don't get too carried away, as Varaday's Hill awaits you – the test that separates the men from the boys. At the end of every great race there is a great hill. Varaday's is the one on the Loskop. Be warned, it is long and tiring and even the most seasoned athlete can be reduced to walking if they don't take it easy up Bugger’s Hill and through the Kranspoort Valley. Once over this final obstacle, the run into the resort is pleasant and welcome. The Loskop Dam tempts you as it is the indication that you are close to the finish. A race well worth the effort, to be sure.
